5 Steps To Preventing Cancer Before It Begins - With Diet
By: Brenda Skidmore
Did you know that what you eat can make a difference whether you develop cancer? Most nutritional experts agree that what you choose to eat consistently makes a huge difference.
Some facts about cancer are that doctors diagnose more than 1 million cases each year in the United States. Scientists think that in the years it takes normal cells to become cancerous, we have ample opportunity to stop cancer from occurring. Cancer doesn't happen overnight and just suddenly appear.
If cancer tendencies run in your family, then here are 5 healthy forming habits you might start implementing today.
Step one: Being overweight is a high risk for cancer, lose it. Fill up on veggies, salads, low fat watery soups, and legumes. Strictly limit sugary foods, and avoid alcohol. Fill up with water before meals, one to two glasses before a meal and add another one to two glasses of water within an hour or two after meals.
Step two: Eat at least 5 or more servings each day of fruits and vegetables ( preferably in their raw form). Minerals and the antioxidant vitamins A,C, and E are abundant in produce. The antioxidant vitamins are notorious for fighting free-radical cell system damage. Can't always get in 5 a day, then supplement with a good vitamin/mineral formula. There are even specific antioxidant vitamin supplements available.
Step three: Put more fiber in your diet. Lower cancer rates are noted in countries where people eat high fiber diets. By including 5 servings of raw fruit or veggies in a daily diet your one step ahead already but you can also add legumes, nuts, seeds, and whole grains. Ditch the white bread and switch to whole grain bread (look at the first ingredient on the label ( it should say whole wheat, barley, oat etc.).
Step four: Watch your fats! Avoid trans fatty acids found in processed foods. Read labels and and avoid to much food that contains oils that are 'hydrogenated' or 'partially hydrogenated'. Cut back on saturated animal fats. As a nation that overindulges in omega-6 polyunsaturated fats (even though it is considered a healthy fat), there is a severe shortage of omega-3 essential fat in our diets. Eat more cold water fish such as salmon and tuna, or supplement with quality fish oil capsules. Omega-3 can also be found in free range eggs, flaxseed, and walnuts.
Step five: Above all be adventurous by eating a variety of foods. Stay away from the trap of focusing on one or two specific foods that claim to 'cure' cancer. There are many different compounds in a balanced diet that seem to work together. Each different food you include has several different substances that may help ward off cancer, and many scientists agree that there are many others yet to be discovered.
Remember whole foods (unprocessed) have more available nutrients to fight off cancer by:
destroying free radicals that damage DNA
helps eliminate carcinogens (cancer causing agents)
blocks activation of carcinogens
inhibits carcinogens (the disease process that leads to cancer)
A few additional diet tips that are thought to help include:
include herbs and spices such as turmeric, oregano, basil and various others, herbs like fruits and vegetables contain phytochemicals
green tea has been noted to have antioxidant power with a substance identified as catechins, black tea is not as high in this substance
use some flaxseed in cereals, salads, or shakes, a good source of omega-3
Drinking water is often overlooked in a healthy diet plan. This one crucial step can go a long way in fighting the prevention or progression of cancer or many other diseases. Remember to also include a good unprocessed salt with added hydration (they work together).
Keeping your body properly hydrated should be the basic foundation of a healthier diet. Try it, believe it, and envision it, a healthier and happier life!
