The Curse of Obesity

By: Paramesh Waran

How do you view an obese person? With sympathy? With derision? I bet it is the latter in most cases since, they represent our own inability to keep our weights under control. In their reflections we see ourselves, what we could become in the future if we continue on the path we are on, unable to control our own weights.

However, we fail to change our food habits. We have become far too dependent on fast foods as, they are convenient, attractive and satiate our senses. We do not consider their inherent harmfulness.

Is there a connection between Fast food and obesity? The answer is a resounding yes. Fast food and obesity are closely linked. Studies have shown that fast foods are very high in energy density and these high density foods contain more calories than our normal foods and, the quantity of these foods result in making us fat and onward lead us to obesity. A typical fast food meal has an energy density 150% more than an average traditional meal. Many upermarket ready-meals and convenience foods are also very energy dense. To stem the tide of obesity, its important that we dont just swap one unhealthy meal for another. Fast foods also contain high amount of sodium (salt), oil, refined sugar and refined flour which together with the high calorific value cause immense harm.

The ancient Indian medical science of Ayurveda sets out that refined sugar causes obesity, acidity, dental cavities, osteoporosis, high cholesterol levels, migraine, kidney deseases etc. and leads to metabolic disorders. Fried fast foods cause acidity and indigestion. Foods deficient in fibre give rise to constipation and irregular bowel habits.

Health and weight loss can be easily achieved by following a healthy weight loss program which recommends lots of health foods like fresh fruits, vegetables etc. in your daily diet. A friendly word of warning here. Many so called diet fads cause more harm than good. It is advisable to keep away from them in ones own interest.

As the saying goes, A healthy body is a temple that houses a healthy mind and, a healthy body is one that attracts rather than repels. Obesity, any one?
